Marine Subwoofer considerations:

Marine subwoofers have to be specially treated against the issues that being on the water inevitably entail. From the rocking of the waves to the splash of sea water, this type of speaker needs to do more than reproduce quality sound if it is going to last more than a fraction of the boating season.

UV Rays

UV rays, also known as ultraviolet radiation, can wreak serious damage on many components. You may have seen this happen to the interior of your car after a time, particularly during the summer months. This can cause surfaces to weaken, which can initially hurt the sound reproduction of your speakers and subsequently cause them to fail. This is far worse on boats than in cars because of the reflective characteristics of the water. Because of this, marine subwoofers have specially coated surfaces that can withstand the rays of the sun.

Wind and Other Forces

Whether you take your boat on the ocean or on a lake, there will be waves. These waves can suddenly become violent, knocking connections loose and potentially starting a fire. In some cases, a loose connection can even lead to a shock hazard. Because of this, the connections in marine subwoofers are sturdier than in those you would use in your home, or even in your car. The suspension on marine subwoofers also has to be more robust than it would need to be in other applications for this same reason.

Water Infiltration

Water is one of the most destructive forces on a speaker. Because of the potential of water to rot fabric or paper diaphragms and spiders, marine subwoofers need to have components made from water-repellent materials, and for additional protection that they need to be encased in something waterproof. As well, electronic components need to have a protective film over them so that the water does not short out the system. Once inside, water can ruin the electronics quickly if they are not protected from its shorting, corroding effects.

Particulate Matter

Marine subwoofers also need to be prepared for solid matter, albeit on a small scale. Since sand-sized particles can become an issue even in fresh water, these systems need to be especially durable to withstand the pouring on of these materials. Marine subwoofers must also have durable cases that can intercept this matter so it does not impact on the more delicate electrical components inside.
