Testing and analysis of the Orion XTR2500.1Dz

High performance car audio brand Orion has been backing up their slogan "proud to be loud", for years. Their XTR2500.1Dz is a beastly monoblock that can easily power a couple of high power subs. But it does come at a high cost. Stay tuned in a few minutes for our amplifier testing.

What's inside the box

Inside the box is a remote bass control with extension, data extension,  instruction manual, hardware and allen keys, amplifier birthing sheet, and monoblock Orion amplifier.

Specs

Orion's XTR series innovates by offering incredible power in their monoblock and multi channel amplifiers. They rate their XTR2500.1Dz 1050W RMS @ 4 ohms, 1600W RMS @ 2 ohms, and 2500W RMS @ 1 ohms.

Orion provided the amplifier with a unique CEA birth certificate where this amp tested with an output of 2959W RMS of actual output @ 1 ohm, they hit that even with a testing voltage of 12.6V!

Connections/Dimensions

This XTR features a pair of RCA inputs and a pair of RCA outputs, gain control, subsonic filter, bass boost, low pass filter and phase control. Connect the remote bass control to its input to control levels up front.

To prevent damage to your gear, the XTR features 4 protection modes: thermal, DC offset, short circuit, and undervoltage. Dimensions include 9-1/4" x 2-1/2" x 14-1/2", making it fairly compact.

Linking Two Amplifiers Together

This monoblock is designed for single channel operation, but it is also strappable with another XTR2500.1Dz to create a monster subwoofer amplifier system. One amplifier will be the master and one will be the slave amplifier. To do this you will link both amplifiers together using the Data Link ports, the connector is included. You will also chain the RCA’s together using a similar method, master outputs to the inputs of the slave. This forges a power-house for high output subwoofers with incredible power. Make sure you don't starve the amps, you will need multiple batteries and an upgraded alternator.

These ratings prove the XTR to be a beastly amplifier of massive bass potential, plus makes the minimum requirement of 0 AWG power ground wire a necessity. Fortunately Orion provided oversized terminals for low gauge wire. 12AWG is fine for remote turn on and subwoofers.

XTR2500.1Dz Testing

Two channels driven, 4 ohm, 1 KHz, 13.1v

HP8903B Audio Analyzer: 1550W RMS per channel, 1.7% distortion and 55 volts of output.

AMM-1: 1450 Watts

Current draw: 70 amps

Car amplifier installation

We show you the complete process of installing a Pioneer Double DIN car stereo in a Chevy truck. The in-depth video shows the installation of the interface, and steering wheel control.

Amplifier Installation basics

Let's start with the basics of adding or installing a car amplifier. First you will need to plan your installation and power wiring, this usually is the most difficult part of the installation for most.

How to choose the proper wire size explained

What size power wire do I need for my amplifier? Well, that depends on the length of the wire and the power consumption of the amplifier. We walk you through how to choose the right gauge wire and wire material depending on your amplifier installation requirements.

How to wire speakers and subwoofers to your new amplifier

In our third video we demonstrate the various ways you can wire speakers and amplifiers to all types of amplifiers. There different ways to do this depending on the type of amplifier you choose to purchase.

What is gain? How do I set it properly?

In our fourth video we demonstrate how to set the gains on your amplifier to prevent damage to your speakers, subwoofers and even possibly your new amplifier. Using a portable oscilloscope we show you how to set your gains.
