In April 2016 I bought a Safesight SC301-SC2102 3.5-Inch Reverse Backup monitor and camera system. I installed them on a 1998 Toyota Tacoma. Because mounting options are very limited in this model truck, I made a bracket and mounted the monitor onto the center panel below the radio cubby hole. I had a problem with the camera itself so I called QMV. After explaining the problem the man told me he would send me another camera at no cost. I received the replacement 3 days later. Good work, QMV!!

I mounted the replacement camera, made the connections, and have had no problems with the installation or the operation. The monitor has two buttons on the back, one to change the image so that it looks like the mirror image or so it looks like what you would see if you turned your head around a looked out the back window, and the other to set the image brightness. I set it to the lowest brightness and that works for me. The camera works fine when it is dark outside and the colors are bright in the daylight. The monitor is mounted low enough to preclude any glare and to be practically invisible from outside the truck. The cable included in the system is more than long enough to reach from the camera, up alongside the left (or right) frame rail, into the cab and up the transmission hump to the monitor. It probably would be too short if I wanted to mount the monitor high on the windshield, but there was no room up there anyways so the point is moot.

I have a shell on the back of the truck that blocks my vision substantially and so I have a tendency to back into things. I bought the system to see what I might run into when backing into darker, tight little remote areas when I travel off-road. So far this year I have not yet done that, so I cannot comment on the camera's durability when driving on washboard and other rough-surfaced roads and trails. That being said, I would recommend this system to anybody who wants to install an inexpensive backup camera system in their vehicle.

Good Video, a Few Problems, Overall I Am Satisfied With My SC0301-SC0302

I installed the SC0301-SC0302 in a 1998 Toyota Tacoma TRD. I bought it because I was tired of backing into trees and stuff on the ground for the last 30 years.

The install was successful but it did take a couple of hours to to fabricate a mount for the monitor. I removed the little plastic mount and attached the mount in its place.

I mounted the monitor down low beneath the cubby hole that's under the radio. That's about the only place that was feasible. That's a nice, dark spot so I don't think I'll have to deal with sun glare on the monitor. I spliced into the leads going to one of the two extra power sockets and have power to the monitor when the key is in the Ignition position and the truck is shifted into reverse.

I routed the camera video cable through some 1/2-inch flex tubing that I bought. I routed the flex tubing along the existing flex tubing near the top of the driver's side frame rail and secured it with tie-wraps.

The cable was long enough (19.5 feet) to run from the camera to the cab and up to a 2-DIN unit. I didn't have a 2-DIN radio so I just wrapped the extra cable up under the carpet under the driver's seat.

The license plate adapter was too long and covered part of the month and year tags on the license plate. The camera was missing one of the small screws that hold the camera mount to the adapter, and the camera would not stay positioned correctly. The screw was missing from the shipment.

The wires from the camera are indeed tiny (28 gauge??) but weren't a problem for me to solder to the backup light. I threaded the power cable to the left tail light through a 1/2-inch hole that was already there, and I used a grommet that I had to protect the wire from chaffing. I ran the ground wire directly to the body inside the tail light area and through an eyelet.

The camera did not display the backup guide lines. I called Tech Support, explained the problems, and the man with whom I talked said he would send me a new camera later that day. I called about 9AM Pacific time and the man was polite and understanding.

Unit has great video quality, night vision also works well. Pretty easy to install but that really depends more on how good you are with removing certain interior parts in order to run and hide the wires. license plate mount is very convenient and helps keep the camera up and out of harms way. Seems very well built except for one thing which was extremely frustrating. The wires are so thin, I could not even strip them with the smallest setting of my wire strippers which is 22 gauge, would not even scratch the insulation. This made the installation more difficult because the 4 or 5 thin strands of wire where very fragile and difficult to work with without breaking them. I would have given 5 stars up and down had it not been for this. To bad because tripling the thickness of the wires would have added about 50 cents to the cost of the product. (Posted on 1/23/2014)

Good quality unit, but lacking on installation instructions.I installed mine on a 2008 F 350 short bed crew cab.The cable that comes with the camera was long enough to place the camera on the dash, driver side.Mine is wired to an ignition hot wire and a switch so I can turn it off whenever I want to.I have had it about a month and so far all is well. An excellent system, and easier to install than I expected. The lack of instructions was not a big problem, since the system is not complex - I checked that the components worked together prior to installing, which also allowed me to determine "which way is up" for the camera. The wide viewing angle, and the ability to adjust the camera angle after installation, makes it insensitive to where on the vehicle it is mounted. After 5 hours of use, the display showed fuzzy grey vertical bars, which slowly went away - now after a month of use, no recurrence. (Posted on 10/9/2013)

Did a lot of research before buying. Wires are thin but manageable. Works great! Picture is very clear. Parking grids help with depth perception when backing up. Under an hour to install on 2008 Chevy Avalanche. Biggest issue is no directions. If you want the monitor to only come on when backing up, then disregard the red wire attached to the video cable. I cut mine off. Otherwise monitor will be on all the time. Hook up camera power wire to reverse lights and monitor power wire to fuse box and ground. Plug and play Video cable from camera to monitor and that's it!! I hooked up everything first to ensure working before installing. (Posted on 9/9/2013)

Cons: I don't read Korean, and even in English, instructions the size of a business card, are too little.
The wire from the front to the back of a Dodge 2500 extended cab, made it, by about one inch, when routed the shortest way. (since it made it, this could be in the pro section.)

Neutral: Can't say much about durability after one day.

Pro: Wonderful picture quality both in the dark (the lights work great) and in bright sunlight. The monitor has color distance lines, that go from green to red, giving a very accurate feel for distance to object. I put some empty cardboard boxed behind the truck and could pull up to less than a foot of them.
I like the 3.5" monitor. It doesn't block anything and my ashtray holds it. Looks good too.

For this price you can't beat it. The picture Quality and product quality are amazing for the price point. You wont find a better deal out there. However my order came with not instructions for installation or wiring. I found out how to do the final install from another persons review(running the power from the camera up the red cable that was connected to the video cable). All in all I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to put a backup camera on their car. Just note that its going to take you a while depending on what car you have, running the video cable from the camera to the monitor took some time so theres no getting around that. Great IR night visibility. If you have any basic knowledge of auto electronics and some patience you can get this in no problem. (Posted on 4/3/2013)

Other than the camera lens being misaligned badly to the driver side of the car requiring multiple shim washers to center the image correctly in the monitor, the product performed as advertised.Looking down on the camera now, it appears it is facing to the right rear, but it is actually correctly centered with the shims. Very clear image, good low light performance. The 3.5" monitor was small and thin enough to be mounted on the driver's side sun visor on my 1998 BMW 540I. That's good because other mounting options were limited due to the tiny space on the console. At this price , I know quality control can't be the best. Also the included cord was not long enough to reach from the back license plate to the car sun visor and required I pay for a $10 cord extension. Overall, worth the money. (Posted on 3/3/2013)

Pretty clean install. Instructions were kind of vague, but I hooked it up before installing everything. There is a red power wire that is connected to the RCA long wire that you can use to send power from the camera to the monitor. This did not show up on the instructions.

Also, You can ground the camera and by hooking up the RCA, the monitor is grounded. A cleaner wiring diagram would be good, but easy enough for somebody minimally familiar with wiring.

Screen is about 3.25" but very good resolution. There are always a couple of horizontal lines in the image; don't know where they come from but they are not a big hindrance.
Unit is compact and if needed to be mounted on dash, as it was for me, then this is less obtrusive.
Installation was easy, just fishing some wires from licence plate where camera is mounted, along frame to truck cab and to dashboard.
Bottom line: good value for the price, but if you are satisfied only with perfection, then shop on.

Question:

Is the camera adjustable?

Answers:

The camera can be adjusted on the vertical axis. It does have limited range but it has roughly 30 degrees worth of adjustment.

Question:

Does the unit display the rear view when the car is in reverse, or all the time? What is the second auto sense video input used for? Aside from having to drill a hole for the camera in one unit and the other having a license plate bracket are there any other differences between the 2 units?

Answers:

  • Posted by Store Owner on Wednesday, August 28, 2013

This item can be configured to show only in reverse or all the time. The difference in the two operation states is in the wiring. If you only want the item to come on when placed in reverse you will wire the camera to receive power from the reverse light. If you want the item on as soon as the vehicle is turned on, you will need to power the camera from a source that has power as soon as the key is turned.

The second video input is used to connect a second camera or some other video source.

There are no differences between the two other than the camera mounting.
