  • 14 gauge switching wires
  • Conventional 87, 87a, 30, 86, and 85 pin locations
  • Completely insulated terminals
  • 11 inch wiring leads
    Dimensions:
  • Socket: 1 3/8" (w) x 1 7/16" (D) x 1-7/16" (H)
  • 14 gauge 11-1/2 inch long wiring leads
  • Pin 30 - (Black wire) Constant Ground or Constant positive (This will be what the relay switches)
  • Pin 85 - (Red wire) Coil
  • Pin 86 - (White wire) Coil
  • Pin 87a - (Blue wire) Normally closed contact
  • Pin 87 - (Green wire) Normally open contact

Pin configuration (When using BU509TD Time Delay Relay):

  • Pin 30 - (Black wire) - Must have constant or accessory 12 volts all-time, as this is what powers the circuit on the relay
  • Pin 85 - (Red wire) - Single pulse (+12 volts) to trigger time delay off (Constant 12 volts can be applied and once +12 volts is removed relay will stay latched for duration of timer.)
  • Pin 86 - (White wire) - Ground
  • Pin 87a - (Blue wire) - (+12) volt output (Normally closed contact - on except when time delay is active)
  • Pin 87 - (Green wire) - (+12) volt output (Normally open contact - on for duration of set time)

Pin configuration (When using BU510TD Time Delay Relay):

  • Pin 30 - (Black wire)- Must have constant or accessory 12 volts all-time, as this is what powers the circuit on the relay
  • Pin 85 - (Red wire) - Constant (+12 volts) to trigger time delay on (Requires the removal of +12 volts to reset the timer)

Relay Sockets – Complete Guide

What is a Relay Socket?

A relay socket (also called a relay base or relay holder) is the plastic base that a relay plugs into. It provides secure electrical connections and makes it easy to install, replace, or service the relay without cutting or soldering wires directly to the relay pins.

Why Use a Relay Socket?

  • Makes relay replacement quick and tool-free
  • Protects the relay terminals
  • Allows for cleaner, more professional wiring
  • Easier to add fuses, diodes, or resistors
  • Enables modular and expandable designs

Main Types of Relay Sockets

Type Size Pins Interlocking Best For
Micro Relay Socket Small 5 Yes/No Tight spaces
Full-Size Relay Socket Standard 5 Yes/No High current, custom builds
ISO Relay Large 4/5 Usually No OEM replacements

Key Features Explained

  • Interlocking (BRSPC, BRS14PT, BRS14E, BRS12E, BRS14MR, BRSCP) – Can be connected together to form neat relay banks
  • Non-Interlocking (BRSC, BRSP) – Individual sockets for flexible spacing
  • Socket Only vs With Contacts (BRSCN comes with terminals)
  • Solder Tab (BRSS) – Best for high-vibration environments

Standard 5-Pin Relay Socket Pinout

  • 30 – Power Input (Common)
  • 87 – Normally Open Output
  • 87a – Normally Closed Output
  • 85 – Coil Ground
  • 86 – Coil Positive (+12V trigger)

Common Applications

  • Custom car audio systems
  • Auxiliary lighting (LED bars, fog lights)
  • Cooling fans & fuel pumps
  • Winches and horns
  • Marine and race car electrical systems

Pro Tip: Always use a fuse on Pin 30 and consider dielectric grease for better corrosion protection.

Pro Tips for Using Relay Sockets

  • Always use the correct wire gauge — Match wire size to your current load (e.g., 12–14 AWG for 20–30A applications).
  • Add a fuse on Pin 30 — This is critical for safety. Place an appropriately rated fuse as close as possible to the power source.
  • Use dielectric grease — Apply a small amount on the relay pins and inside the socket to prevent corrosion and improve electrical contact.
  • Choose solder tab sockets for high vibration — For race cars, off-road vehicles, or marine use, the BRSS (solder tab version) offers superior vibration resistance.
  • Take advantage of interlocking sockets — Models like BRSPC or RS102E allow you to create clean, professional-looking relay banks with minimal space.
  • Label your relays and wires — Makes future troubleshooting much easier.

Bonus Tip: When using crimp terminals, always use a quality crimping tool and double-check for solid connections before final installation.
