Our testing and analysis of the Sony XAV-AX150
We just got Sony's XAV-AX150 6.95” digital media receiver, and it’s a pretty nice entry level unit and perhaps is the only unit to buy. This double din features a 6.95” display, resistive touchscreen, bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Coming in under $349, the XAV-AX150 is one of the cheapest Major brand name Apple Carplay and Android Auto head units on the market today, this thing is a freaking steal. Stay tuned at the end of the video for our power testing.
What's inside the box?
Inside the box is a 3-year warranty card, owner’s manual, mounting hardware, main harness, external bluetooth microphone, steering wheel harness, wireless remote control, and 6.95” double din stereo.
Oddly shapped
The AX150 is a digital media receiver, so no disc slot. The unique rear chassis of the stereo was designed in a way to ensure added vehicle compatibility. It's a far smaller L-shaped single din stereo chassis with a 6.95” Double DIN screen. Despite its double-DIN display, the rear chassis is far smaller than conventional double-DIN units. This makes for much easier installation, and leaves plenty of room for cabling and other accessories in the space behind the display.
Rear Connections
The rear connections include main wiring harness for power ground and speaker, backup camera input, two pairs of 2V RCA-preamp outputs for front and rear plus a single 2v subwoofer output, external microphone for hands free calling, Steering wheel control input, radio antenna and USB input.
The screen
The display is 6.95”, 500 NIT’s in brightness and features a resistive touchscreen with excellent sensitivity with gesture control, however it is not 720p HD. Kind of a bummer. It has a resolution of 800 x 480. Which is a bit disappointing but the display does have excellent brightness, color and vibrance. The XAV-AX150 features what Sony calls a bezel-less panel allowing for a seamless display The command panel on the front of the stereo below the display features a home button, volume up and down, track back and track forward, and voice assist.
OS
The overall design of the operating system is excellent, it features Big fonts, big graphics, and pure simplicity. I dig it. The radio tuner features 30 presets, 18 FM, 12 AM.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Apple Carplay and Android Auto are essential for any new stereo. They both require a USB connection on this stereo, they cannot operate wirelessly. The connection will also charge your device. Get access to your music, audio, messaging and navigation apps which all look great on the large display. Video apps do not transfer. Both work great with voice commands for Siri and Google Assistant.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth allows hands free calling and wireless music streaming. The USB will not allow music playback from a smartphone outside of Carplay or Android Auto. However, a USB thumb drive will play back music and video files. For audio it is compatible with WAV, MP3, WMA, M4A and FLAC files. For video it is compatible with MPEG4-SP, H.264, WMV, FLV, MKV, and XviD. You cannot upload or view JPEG images on this stereo.
Screen Mirroring
It is possible to screen mirror a smartphone to the XAV-AX150 with its back up camera input using a switcher for video and Bluetooth for audio. All you would need is one of our mirroring kits for iPhone or Android and out AVS210 switcher. I'll put a link for both options in the video bio below. This will effectively get anything you want onto your stereo, youtube, netflix, and HBO.
Steering wheel control
Sony made the XAV-AX150 steering wheel control ready with the ASWC-1 Interface.
Wallpapers
For visual customization, the stereo has five vibrant built in preset wallpapers to choose from, illumination level and touch panel adjustment.
How does it sound?
For high audio performance Sony fitted the receiver with a 4x55W Dynamic Reality amp. Sony gives you full control of the audio settings.
The XAV-AX150 also has some solid power. It meets CEA-2006 Power Standard Specifications with an RMS Power Output: 20 Watts x 4 channels at 4 ohms with < 1% THD+N.
But, Let’s test this out for ourselves and see what it can do.
Sony XAV-AX150 Testing
XAV-AX150 Two channels driven, 4 ohm, 1 KHz, 14.4v
The first test we ran was 2 channels driven @ 4 ohms, 14.40 volts, 1 KHz, EQ flat. Because the Sony doesn’t have an audio input we use a 0dB reference signal on a USB thumbdrive. Our Audio Precision will measure distortion. At volume 29, our HP8903B Audio Analyzer Picked up 19 W RMS, 0.07% distortion and 8.6 volts of output. We swap between left and right channels. Our AMM-1 read 14 Watts and we drew 4.5 amps of current.
XAV-AX150 Two channels driven, 4 ohm, 40 Hz, 14.4v
Down to 40 hz. At volume 29, our HP picked up 18 W RMS, .08% distortion and 8.5 volts of output. We swap between left and right channels. Our AMM-1 read 16W RMS, and we drew 5.6 amps of current.
XAV-AX150 RCA Outputs, 1 KHz, 14.4v
Next we tested the RCA pre-amp outputs. At 1 KHz, at volume 43, we got 2.1 volts with 0.5% distortion.
XAV-AX150 RCA Outputs, 40 Hz, 14.4v
At 40 Hz, at volume 43, we got 2.1 volts with .23% distortion.
XAV-AX150 RCA Outputs, Frequency response
Our final test was frequency response. We used our Audio Precision to run up each frequency
Solid audio performance for sure. But let’s go over what Sony missed out on which would have made this headunit even better. Obviously at this price point there is no Wireless Carplay and Android Auto, No HD Display and no 3.5mm Auxiliary Audio/Video input, which is often used feature for most.
Car stereo installation
We show you the complete process of installing a Pioneer Double DIN car stereo in a Chevy truck. The in-depth video shows the installation of the interface, and steering wheel control.
Stereo Installation Basics
Let's start with the basics of replacing your car stereo receiver. In out first video we demonstrate how to crimp or solder your wiring, mount your new receiver to your dash kit and prepare everything for an installation in your vehicle.
Wiring Harnesses Explained
What do all of the wire colors mean? Aftermarket manufacturers have made car stereo receiver installation an easier process by using a standardized wire color scheme. We walk you through what each individual wire does, this way if you have an installation that doesn't perform properly you will have the resources to begin troubleshooting your installation.
Simple radio Installation
In our third video we demonstrate this installation process from start to finish. We show you the complete process of installing a Pioneer Double DIN car stereo in a Chevy truck. The in-depth video shows the installation of the interface, and steering wheel control.
Complex radio Installation
In our fourth video we demonstrate a much more difficult installation of a Car Stereo receiver. In this video we are using a more complicated dash kit and a difficult level of installation.
